Mags, ammo and take it out shooting. The 10/22 is the AR/1911 of the rimfire world and there are tons of aftermarket parts for it or leave it stock. Great little gun that you can really make your own. Some people will do skanky things for $25, and not all those people are crack whores.

All I needed was $40 trigger parts and a scope. It works great for squirrels. At first it took me a while to get used to how a semi shoots. But now, out on the ranch I can knock off squirrels up too 200 yards if they do not run into the hole after a miss. It takes a shot or two depending at 200 yards but you get right on it fast.
I found that this time of year when the little offspring come out of the hole they are supper small and it’s great target practice. Much more realistic than shooting at paper. Once you can hit a tiny squirrel, especially when it’s standing and is it’s thinnest or moving, you get real good. An adult squirrel at 100 yards looks like a house after shooting the little ones at those distances. Great training and around here it’s a service to get rid of as many of them you can.. In fact, there are shooters who ask to come out at their expense.
The 10/22 scoped is a great basic cheap rifle. The only issue out of the box is the trigger. Mine was so hard to pull it through me off target to get a shot off. Once I bought the Volquartsen parts it was a cake walk.Comment

I love my 10/22s and I have several of them. Either a scope or a red dot sight really improves the rifle. The one thing that I do not like about the 10/22 is the stock sight system. On several of my 10/22s I added a Volquartsen drop-in trigger -- on this one there is an EOTech RDS and the VQ trigger, rounded out with a Hogue stock:

If you want to stick with iron sights, you cannot do better than the Tech Sights. Here is my review of the 10/22 Tech Sight on Amazon (if you find my review helpful, I would appreciate a "helpful" click on Amazon). http://www.amazon.com/review/RBK5RFL...cm_cr_rdp_perm. Here is my review of the VQ trigger assembly: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1M1OIO...cm_cr_rdp_perm
Here is my other rifle with the Tech Sight, which is essentially identical to the sights that the Army used for the M16a1 I carried in the Army:

Here is the front sight. It is adjustable just like my M16a1 sight was:

My plan is to use it to train my kids about firearms, and firearm safety. That's first. I like those tech sights Roger. Reminds me of peep sights I used to have when I learned. Very cool. I don't want the kids learning with a scope or a red-dot. They need to learn the hard way too.
